ADRIAN, Mich. -- The No. 5 Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team won 5-2 on both nights over No. 7 Niagara University on Thursday and Friday.
The Bulldogs and Purple Eagles met at the Arrington Ice Arena for a highly anticipated series for both teams. Thursday night's opening game started with a goal from Niagara seven minutes in, but Adrian answered right back on a goal from
Chad Noetzel to tie it after one. The second period saw
Sebastian Smith score twice to put the home team up 3-1 heading into the final frame. In the third,
Nathaniel Mott and
Dylan Gajewski added tallies to increase the lead to 5-1 before Niagara would find one more to finish the game, 5-2. Goaltender
Noah Decottignies made 24 saves in the win and captain
Matteo DiGiulio collected three assists.
On Friday afternoon, the Bulldogs were looking to complete the sweep over the Purple Eagles and were successful as they scored five unanswered goals from
Cameron Armstrong,
Alex Schaumburger, Smith,
Matthew DiCesare, and DiGiulio. Niagara would add two in the third but it was not enough as Adrian completed the sweep with the help of another stellar performance in goal from Decottignies, who stopped 32 of 34 shots.
The MD1 Bulldogs will be back in action on November 16-17 in a GLCHL conference home and home matchup with rival Davenport University. The Bulldogs and Panthers will clash at the Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday at 7:30 PM and in Grand Rapids on Friday at 8:30 PM.
