ANGOLA, Ind. – The Adrian College men's wrestling team traveled to Trine University on Wednesday night with one thing on their mind. Win the MIAA Championship. The Bulldogs came away with a 35-12 victory over the Thunder and won the MIAA Championship for the first time in 52 years.
Zachary Phifer started the day with a win by fall at 125 to put Adrian up 6-0. Trine responded with a pin of its own, but the Bulldogs bounced back with wins by decision from
Tanner Smith and
Zachary Platte. Adrian was tripped up again at 157 bringing the score to a 12-12 tie.
At 165,
Zach Altman shifted the momentum and won by major decision to give Adrian the lead. At 174,
Derick Duvall won by tech fall to extend the Bulldog lead which was followed up by a major decision win from
Blake Williams.
Dylan Wellbaum recorded a victory at 197 by major decision before
Kyle Emery ended the night with a pin.
The 35-12 win put Adrian at 4-0 in the MIAA to win the conference championship for the first time since 1971.
Adrian's job isn't done yet as they have a quick turnaround with the MIAA Individual Championship at home on Saturday, February 4 at 11:00 AM at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
