Men's Wrestling Lands Three MIAA Individual Champions

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's wrestling team hosted the MIAA Individual Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center. The Bulldogs are coming off their first team MIAA Championship in 52 years. The Bulldogs went on to record three individual champions on the day including Zach Altman at 165, Derick Duvall at 174, and Dylan Wellbaum at 197.
 
Adrian had a third-place finish at 125 from Colton Weimer. Weimer went 2-1 on the day. After receiving a first round bye, Weimer lost in the semifinals to move to the consolation bracket. He went on to win by fall in the consolation semifinals before another win by fall in the third-place match. Mackenze Baird finished fourth at 133 with a 2-2 finish. After a loss in the quarterfinal, he won by fall and medical forfeit before losing in the third-place match by decision to place fourth.
 
Tanner Smith finished second at 141 on the afternoon. Smith earned a first round by before winning in sudden victory in the quarterfinals. He went on to win by decision in the semifinals before losing by decision in the championship. Also at 141, Brody Chase finished fourth on the day. He opened the day with a win by fall before a loss in the quarterfinals. He won his next three bouts before losing by injury default in the third-place match.
 
At 165, Trent Rector finished fourth on the day. He lost his opening match but went on to win four straight bouts before losing the third-place match. Adrian saw its first champion at 165. Altman finished the day 3-0 with a win by decision and a win by medical forfeit before winning by a 6-2 decision in the championship.
 
At 174, Duvall went 3-0 on the day as he began with a 19-2 tech fall win. He went on to win 19-1 by tech fall in the semifinals before a 3-2 decision win in the championship. At 184, Trevin Eggleston finished fourth on the day. He worked his way through the consolation bracket after an opening loss. He went on to win four matches in a row to advance to the third-place match where he lost by tech fall.
 
The Bulldog's final champion came at 197 by Wellbaum who entered as the No. 1 seed. Wellbaum won all three matches he wrestled by fall including the championship. Brayden Randolph also wrestled at 197 where he placed third. After winning his first two matches, Randolph was sent to the consolation bracket after a semifinal loss. He won the next round by decision before winning the third-place match by medical forfeit.
 
The final placer of the day for Adrian came at 285 where Lukas Zywicki finished third. He won his opening bout by decision before recording a loss in the quarterfinals. From there he won his final four bouts to finish 5-1 and place third.
 
Adrian will take a week off before heading to the Mid-States Invitational on Saturday, February 11. Mid-States will be the last competition for Adrian before they head to the NCAA Central Regional hosted by Case Western Reserve University on February 25-26.
