ALMA, MICH. - The Adrian College men's wrestling team traveled to Alma College for the Alma Open.
Sophomore Max Mader represented the 125-pound division well, securing a pinfall victory in the quarterfinals before ultimately falling in both the semifinals and the consolation semifinals. Freshman Nicholas Dropiewski, also competing at 125, earned a hard-fought win in the consolation second round after a quarterfinal loss, though he was eliminated in his third match.
In the 133-pound class, freshman Eugene Barrientes made a solid run, advancing with a bye and battling to a sixth-place finish, just falling short in the fifth-place match. Senior Ashtyn Bennett stood out in the 141-pound division, earning two pins and a tech fall, demonstrating his aggressive style on the mat.
Freshman Cole Workman competed in the 149-pound class, fighting his way through the consolation bracket after an initial first-round loss, but ultimately fell in the fifth-place match. Senior Landyn VanWyk showed his strength in the 157-pound division, winning his first two matches by pinfall and major decision, before being edged out in the semifinals and taking fourth place.
Sophomore Dominik Whitesel posted a solid 2-2 record in the 165-pound division, securing victories by decision and pinfall. The 174-pound bracket saw three wrestlers in action: junior Angelo Mastroianni finished 1-2, freshman Drake Hurley also went 1-2, and freshman Noah Risner battled but ended with an 0-2 record.
Senior Preston Calvert represented the team in the 184-pound class, going 2-2, while in the heavyweight 285-pound division, Scott Smith earned a sixth-place finish with a 3-2 record.
Adrian is back in action on Thursday, January 23 where the Bulldogs will travel to Trine University for an MIAA matchup. First match is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
