KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Two members of the Adrian College men's tennis team represented the Bulldogs at the ITA Regionals over the weekend. Michael Mascarin and Luca Coutinho competed both as a doubles team and individually in the singles bracket. The pair impressed in doubles play, advancing to the Round of 16.
The tournament began on Friday, with Mascarin and Coutinho opening with an 8-5 win over the College of Wooster. In the Round of 32, the duo pulled off a major upset by defeating the No. 7-seeded team from Case Western, 8-7 (8-6). Their run came to an end in the Round of 16 with an 8-4 loss to a strong University of Chicago team. Chicago had a doubles team win the 2025 NCAA Division III National Championship and reached the Elite Eight as a team in last year's national tournament.
In singles action, Mascarin earned a first-round win over Wheaton College with identical 6-4 sets. In the second round, he faced the No. 17 seed from Denison University. After dropping the first set 6-4, Mascarin bounced back with a 6-4 win to force a tiebreak. He ultimately fell in the deciding set, 10-2.
Coutinho also competed in singles, taking the first set 6-4 in his opening match. However, he dropped the second set 6-3 and lost the tiebreak 10-7. He moved into the consolation bracket but was forced to forfeit his next match due to injury.
Mascarin and Coutinho will look to continue their strong play this weekend, as the Bulldogs take on Ohio Northern on Saturday, October 4, followed by a home match against Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m.
