ADRIAN, Mich. - The men's ice hockey squad scored early and often in the first period of their game on Friday night against MCHA opponent Lawrence University. The first league game for the Bulldogs turned into a lopsided affair after 20 minutes and the home team building a 5-1 lead.
Eric Miller found the net just 1:18 into the game on a takeaway deep in the Vikings zone giving Adrian a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later it was Shawn Skelly notching his fifth goal of the year on the power play with assists from Jeremy Klaver and Adam Krug giving Adrian a 2-0 cushion. Just over four minutes past before Lawrence cut the lead to one on Jon Sacks' first goal of the season with an assist from Masa Takahashi at 8:46.
Eric Bailen made a nifty move in front of the goal for his first tally of the year at 11:21 making it 3-1 with assists from Matt Parkes and Mike Fiorillo. Brad Houston got the first of his three goals on an even strength chance at the 15:32 mark with an assist from Mike Dahlinger ballooning the lead to 4-1. Bobby Hineman became the fifth different player to score in the opening period with his first goal of 2007-08 at 18:01 with assists from Klaver and Parkes.
The game slowed down a bit in the second period but the physical play did not as there were 11 penalties called including two 10-minute misconduct penalties to Dahlinger and Sam Kuzyk at the 6:02 mark of the period. In all eight guys served time after a scrum in front of the Lawrence net. Adrian and Lawrence were totaling 21-17 in shots after two periods. Kuzyk's power play goal at 10:50 of the stanza gave Adrian a 6-1 lead as Hineman and Houston were credited with an assist.
Skelly scored his team leading sixth goal of the year on a sweet wrist shot from the left wing at 2:13 of the third period to make it 7-2 in favor of the Bulldogs. Houston added his fourth and fifth goals of the year at 9:02 and 15:09 respectively to end the scoring.
Houston recorded four points and now has a +4 rating this season. Captain Adam Krug had two assists on the night and is tied for the team lead with six helpers this season. Brad Fogal picked up the win in net improving to 3-1 with a 2.69 goals against average. He made 24 saves including nine in the third period. Adrian finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play while Lawrence was 1-for-7 with the advantage.
