ADRIAN, Mich. -
After trailing the University of Wisconsin-River Falls by a two goal deficit, the Adrian College women's hockey team battled back to tie with the Falcons 3-3 on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons wasted little time before grabbing the early 1-0 lead when Jenna Scanlon scored an even-strength goal 41 seconds into the contest. After a body checking penalty against the Falcons, the Bulldogs capitalized on the power play to even the score 1-1 when Leah Humphries found the back of the net on a second-chance opportunity in front of the net 3:02 into the game.
The Falcons regained the lead at 6:48 when Jessie Dyslin scored a power play goal, giving the visitors the 2-1 advantage. In the closing seconds of the period, the Falcons stretched their lead to two goals as Scanlon scored her second goal of the game with 25 seconds on the clock on an even-strength effort.
The resilient Bulldogs chipped away at the two goal deficit by controlling much of the second and third periods with solid defense and strong play on special teams. Ainsley Coon put the Bulldogs within one goal of the Falcons 45 seconds into the second period, scoring the second AC power play goal in as many chances in the game at that point.
The Bulldogs nearly got the equalizer in the closing seconds of the second period when Stacey Kempson appeared to have scored a power-play goal just before the buzzer. The goal, however, was waved off and the Bulldogs went to the locker room still trailing the Falcons by one goal.
In the third period, the score remained at 3-2 in favor of UW-River Falls for most of the period in what was a battle of the defenses. With 1:29 left in regulation, the Bulldogs struck again on the power play to knot the game at 3-3 when Alexis Glenn took advantage of an uncontrolled puck in front of the net for her second goal of the season to force overtime.
In the extra frame, the Bulldogs controlled the tempo and the puck for most of the period. Despite having some strong opportunities to end the game, the home team was unable to put the game away and the game ended as a 3-3 tie.
Ashley Kavanagh played a solid game in goal for the Bulldogs, making some strong stops en route to registering 24 saves on the day.
The power play was the key of the game on Sunday for the Bulldogs. Adrian went 3-of-8 (37.5%) on the power play while keeping the Falcons to a less-productive 1-of-6 (16.7%) day on special teams.
The Bulldogs will look to pick up their first victory of 2008 when they travel to Lake Forest College in Illinois next weekend for a Saturday/Sunday series against the Foresters.
