ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College men's varsity hockey team erupted for 18 goals as they picked up their tenth-straight win of the season on Friday night by defeating the Northland College LumberJacks, 18-1.
After taking a lead they would never relinquish just 1:40 into the game on a Joel Workman goal, the Bulldogs scored in spurts throughout the remainder of the game to keep constant pressure on the LumberJack defense. With just under five minutes remaining in the first period, Adam Krug sent a pass across the front of the net to an open Shawn Skelly for his first goal of the night. Kyle Watson then put the Bulldogs up 3-1 less than 30 seconds later with his fifth goal of the season.
The LumberJacks notched their only goal of the game 2:39 before the end of the period on a Matt Tanneberg power-play goal. Any momentum the visitors might have hoped to gain from their goal was wiped away as Krug scored his first goal of the game 14 seconds before the break on a power play opportunity.
The flood gates opened up for the Bulldogs in the second period as they scored a school-record eight goals. Skelly and Reed Renaud both scored within the first two minutes of the period, both on even-strength efforts. Krug netted his second goal of the game and 16th of the season just before the midway point of the second frame. With less than 3:15 left before the second intermission, the Bulldogs scored a flurry of goals. Skelly completed the hat trick to get things going. Quinn Waller (17:06), Mark Gertsakis (17:27), Mike Fiorillo (18:00), and Mike Towns (19:06) all scored goals within two minutes of each other to give the Bulldogs the 12-1 margin as the teams headed back to the locker rooms.
The Bulldogs picked up right where they had left off in the game's final period. Eric Miller and Eric Bailen scored at 8:56 and 10:15, respectively, to push the lead to 14-1 and match the team's previous school-record for goals in a game. Drew Satterley and Joel Workman added goals before the 14 and 15 minute marks in the period. Miller then scored his second goal of the game and team-leading 25th goal of the season with 3:38 left in the game. Brad Houston rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with just under two minutes left in the contest to put the Bulldogs up 18-1 and set a new school record for goals in a game.
Brad Fogal picked up the win in goal, making eight saves over the first two periods of play. Bryan Scott played the third period in goal for the Bulldogs to see some action.
With three assists on the night, junior Adam Krug broke the MCHA record for assists by a junior in a season. The previous mark had been set at 22 by Brian Soik of MSOE in the 2005-2006 season. With seven conference contests remaining, the junior now has 23 assists in MCHA play thus far this season. Additionally, freshman Shawn Skelly tied the league record for assists in a season by a rookie with his 21st assist on Friday night.
The two teams will face-off again tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Arrington Ice Arena.
