ADRIAN, Mich. -
While the scoreboard and atmosphere of Saturday's game differed a bit from the previous night's game, the result was still the same as the Adrian College men's varsity hockey team was victorious over the Northland College LumberJacks by a 7-0 margin.
After solid play by both teams in the first frame, the teams went to the locker rooms at the first intermission in what was then a scoreless tie. In the second period, however, the Bulldogs showed the offensive power that has helped propel them to a #13 national ranking. Eric Miller broke the scoreless game with a power-play goal 2:07 into the period. Just over three minutes after Miller's goal, Shawn Skelly scored his 22nd goal of the season on a short-handed opportunity to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
The third player of the nation's top scoring line, Adam Krug, stretched the lead to three goals at 7:53 with a power-play goal of his own. Miller added his second goal of the night at the 12:23 mark for the Bulldogs' only even-strength goal of the afternoon. Defenseman Zach Galia found the back of the net for the first time of his career with a power-play goal from the top of the zone with 2:41 left before intermission to give the Bulldogs their fifth goal of the period.
In a game where special teams played a huge role, the Bulldogs added two more power-play goals in the game's final period. Quinn Waller (7) and Eric Bailen (9) each netted goals in the third frame to lift the Bulldogs to the 7-0 victory.
Bryan Scott played in goal for the Bulldogs, making 15 saves en route to his first career shut-out victory.
Eric Miller, with his two goal performance, and Shawn Skelly, who had a goal and two assists, have both broken the MCHA record for points in a season by a freshman in league games. The previous mark had been 36. Skelly currently has top honors with 38 points while Miller is right on his heels with 37. Adam Krug also helped rewrite the record books on Saturday. With his three assists, Krug (26) now holds the MCHA record for assists in a season.
The Bulldogs will play host to Marian College next weekend in a showdown of the top two teams in the MCHA. The Bulldogs and the Sabres split their series match-up earlier this season with Marian taking game one 7-5 before the Bulldogs came back to win in game two by a 7-2 score. The loss to Marian on November 30 is the last loss the Bulldogs have suffered before going 10-0 in their last 10 games. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1 in the first game of the series.
