ADRIAN, Mich. -
The men's ice hockey team saw a couple of impressive streaks come to an end on Saturday night as they fell 4-2 to Neumann College. The Bulldogs' 22-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season and their 13-game home winning streak are now in the record books as the Knights played a very physical and sound hockey game improving to 2-1 on the season. Adrian (1-1-1) and Neumann played a very entertaining contest in front of a sellout crowd watching the team unveil their championship banners from a year ago in the Bulldogs' home opener.
The Knights and Bulldogs played a scoreless first period as both teams had few great scoring chances. Adrian and Neumann both had 12 shots on goal in the frame. Bill Foster opened the scoring for Neumann at even strength with assists from Marlon Gardner and Jasper Haltman at the 4:37 mark of the second period. Adrian tied the game two and a half minutes later at even strength as Eric Miller scored his second of the season with an assist from Reed Renaud.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead at the 11:56 mark of the second as Adam Krug scored his fifth of the year on the power play with a beautiful pass from Chris Stansik. Captain Quinn Waller also received an assist on the play. Lincoln Schrock got the neutralizer at the 13:05 mark as his shot went under the right armpit of Brad Fogal at even strength with a helper from Doug Slipacoff.
Matt Ward scored the game-winner on a 5-on-3 advantage for the Knights at the 6:46 mark of the third period for his first of the season. Kyle Casey took a pass from the left side of the net and found a wide-open Ward. Stewart Sjoberg scored on an empty net with one second to play for the final two-goal advantage.
Neumann had 34 shots on goal as Ward led the team with six. Adrian had 31 shots on goal as Krug led the team with nine, including five in the third. Fogal made 30 saves with 22 of those coming in the first two periods. Adrian was 1-of-7 on the power play while Neumann went 2-of-8 with both goals coming in the third. Adrian had 10 penalties for a total of 31 minutes. The two teams will finish their weekend series with a Sunday faceoff at 3:00 p.m.
