Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader at Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It proved to be another successful day on the diamond for the Adrian College baseball team as they improved to 5-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Birmingham Southern who made the jump from Division I to Division III at the beginning of the school year. The Bulldogs claimed a 11-5 nine-inning win in game one and went seven innings in game two before escaping with a 4-3 win in their final at-bat in the seventh inning. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play just seven innnings in the nightcap.

The hitting hero for Adrian was freshman Jake Cappelletty who went 3-for-5 with four RBI in game one and delivered a pinch hit game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give AC their twinbill sweep. Adrian was the designated home team in game two. The pitching win in game two went to Adrian Woods who threw the final 1.2 innings in relief and allowed two hits (1-0). Adam Stone got the start and pitched 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs while striking out four.

The Bulldogs trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and tied the game at 3-3. The first two hitters singled and Cappelletty walked to load the bases with no outs. Nick Sarkissian plated the first Bulldog run on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Kris Powell. The Bulldogs then caught a break as Alexander Younce hit a ball to pitcher who threw it wide of first allowing Cappelletty and Bobby Rickstad to score the tying runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rickstad singled to deep second and then Cappelletty doubled to right center scoring Rickstad from first and giving Adrian a one-run victory. Rickstad finished the game going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Bulldogs scored eight runs in the first three innings of game one cruising to the 11-5 victory. Birmingham Southern scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth just to make things respectable. Alex Webster threw a gem in game one going eight innings and allowing four earned runs with no walks. Adrian pounded out 12 hits as Rickstad, Powell and Younce each had two hits. Andrew Todd also was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
