ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Kalamazoo College on Sunday afternoon by picking up a solid 9-4 win in game two after falling 5-1 in the opener.
The Bulldogs grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first game of the day when Todd Meyers scored on an Alex Cowart sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, that run would be the only time an Adrian player would cross the plate in game one.
The Hornets wasted little time in responding as Ryan Benjamin knocked a two-out home run over the left field wall to knot the score at 1-1.
In what was a pitching duel through the first half of the game, both teams struggled to find offensive output until the Hornets broke open a tight game in the bottom of the fifth when they plated four runs to take the 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs fell short in their comeback bid and dropped game one by the 5-1 margin.
In game two, however, the Bulldog bats came alive as Adrian registered 12 hits in the nightcap. In a balanced offensive attack from the first pitch, the Bulldogs scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of the contest to take a strong 9-0 lead midway through the fifth inning. Kalamazoo managed to plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Adrian defense shut the Hornets down for the remainder of the game.
Alex Cowart, Brett Miskokomon, and Alexander Younce each collected two hits and two RBIs in the game while Todd Meyers had two hits and scored twice to pace the Bulldog offense.
The Bulldogs (10-4, 3-1 MIAA) will next travel to MIAA foe Tri-State University on Wednesday, March 2 for a conference doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 2:00 in Angola, Indiana.
