May 17, 2008

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - It will take one more game to potentially hoist a regional championship trophy for the Bulldogs as Heidelberg hit the ball over all fields in an 8-2 win in the first game on Saturday. The Student Princes registered 14 hits off five different Bulldog pitchers and seized control of the game in the top of the seventh.

Adrian led 2-1 after six innings having scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Todd Meyers and Nate Sarkissian reached base to lead off the inning and Alex Cowart moved both runners over on a groundout. Bobby Rickstad was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Steve Vanderheyden singled to right field to plate Meyers with the tying run and Brian Bilius followed with an RBI single through the left side to give Adrian a 2-1 lead. On the previous play, Rickstad was sent home from second but was thrown out at the dish.

Heidelberg scored four runs in the top of the seventh off four hits and left two runners on base. Adrian Woods (2-1) absorbed his first loss of the season giving up all the runs in the inning. Woods entered in the fifth inning and stranded two runners on base helping out starter Josh Lancaster. Woods pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four hits with one walk. The Bulldogs failed to strikeout any Heidelberg hitters which marked the first time this season they failed to strike out the opposition in a game.

Brian Koehl (5-1) pitched six big innings for the 'Berg allowing seven hits and just one earned run with no walks and six punchouts. Andy Lowe recorded his ninth save of the season throwing the final three innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout.

Sarkissian and Vanderheyden each had a pair of singles for the Bulldogs. Adrian had eight total hits in the game but just one went for extra bases as Jake Cappelletty doubled with two outs in the second inning. Adrian (33-11) will face Heidelberg for the third straight game in the regional beginning at 3:00 p.m. for the Mideast regional title.
