Icers Claim Hackett Builders Title with 3-1 Win over Concordia-Moorhead

ADRIAN, Mich. - The men's hockey team had a fight on their hands against Concordia College (Minn.) on Saturday night but in the end they walked away with a 3-1 win against the Cobbers on the second night of the Hackett Builders Thanksgiving Tournament.

Three of the game's four goals were scored in the opening period as the Bulldogs led 2-1 after 20 minutes. Bobby Hineman put Adrian ahead 1-0 at 2:03 of the first for his first goal of the season. Hineman `s shot from the point beat goaltender Jacob Vatnsdal who was screened in front by two Bulldogs. Shawn Skelly and Eric Miller were each credited with an assist on the even strength goal.

Miller's seventh goal of the season and 65th of his career at 5:09 at even strength gave AC a 2-0 advantage. Skelly and Graham each got an assist as Miller parked himself by the right pipe and slammed home a deflected shot off the blade of Skelly. Brian Kang gave Concordia their goal of the evening at 10:23 on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Kang's third of the season saw him skate in on the right side and fire the puck between the legs of goaltender Brad Fogal. Ben Payne was given an assist as Payne received Concordia's offensive player of the weekend award.

After a scoreless second period which saw Adrian outshoot Concordia, 12-6, the Bulldogs fired 17 shots on Vatnsdal in the third period and found the back of the net once. Blake Barkwell scored his first as a Bulldog at even strength at 4:54 of the third with assists from Rob Hodnicki and Jeff Young. Adrian outshot the Cobbers, 49-19, as Vatnsdal made 46 saves and earned the third star of the game.

Miller was the first star with a goal and assist. Skelly was the second star with two assists giving him six assists on the year. Fogal made 18 saves for the Bulldogs who improve to 8-0 in 2009. AC has now won 34 straight contests and 21 straight games at Arrington Ice Arena.
