ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College women's basketball team fell to the Calvin Knights on Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Center. Jennifer Perrin led the Bulldogs with 25 points in a losing effort. The Knights were able to hold off the Bulldogs due to good free throw shooting. Calvin was 30-of-37 from the charity stripe in a game that had 50 personal fouls.
Megan Bouwens had the hot hand for the Bulldogs early in the game. Bouwens scored the first six points of the game for Adrian. Brook VanEck answered for the Knights as she scored the first six points for Calvin.
The first half was full of action. A full court press from Calvin increased the tempo of the game. The quick pace caused each team to have 12 turnovers through the first 20 minutes.
Adrian led 40-37 at the end of the first half. Bouwens finished the first half with 14 points and six rebounds. Perrin added 12 points and four assists. Marcia Harris had 13 points at halftime for the Knights. VanEck finished the half with 12 points and three rebounds.
The turning point of the game came midway through the second half. The score was tied at 61-61 with 9:37 left to play. A jumper by VanEck gave Calvin a two point lead. The Knights were able to strecth their lead to 67-61 due to three consecutive turnovers from the Bulldogs. Ashley McClarren hit a free throw to make the score 67-62, but two more Adrian turnovers would allow the Knights to increase their lead to 71-62. The Bulldogs never fully recovered from the Calvin 10-1 run, and were eventually defeated 88-81.
Adrian also missed the presence of Bouwens for the final 12 minutes of the game. Bouwens fouled out with 16 points and nine rebounds. Perrin's 25 points led the team. She also had four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Stamps had a good second half after only scoring three in the first. She was 3-for-4 from three point range, and finished with 16 points.
Marcia Harris led all scores with 28 for the Knights. VanEck was also a thorn in Adrian's side as she scored 26 points to go along with seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a game at Saint Mary's on Feb. 11th at 7:30 p.m.
