The move back up north may have been just the thing that Adrian needed as the baseball team blasted Franklin, 17-2, on Friday in their first action since a lackluster spring trip. The 21st-ranked Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the year by slugging out 16 hits including five doubles and a home run against five Grizzly pitchers.
The top three of the order for Adrian were simply awesome as Todd Meyers, Kris Powell and Alex Cowart combined to go 8-for-15 at the plate with seven runs scored and eight RBI's. Powell led the squad with four RBI's and went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Meyers went 2-for-5 with his fifth double of the season. He also scored twice and drove in two runs with a walk. Cowart went 3-for-5 at the dish with a double, two runs scored and two RBI's.
Jake Cappelletty hit the first home run of the year for Adrian with a two-run shot in the third inning. Cappelletty was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's in the six-hole. Joe Dubina led Adrian with four runs scored and the catcher also was 3-for-4 with a double.
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the top of the first and chased Jared Applegate out of the game after 0.2 innings pitched. Applegate allowed no earned runs as Franklin committed two big errors. He also walked three and struck out one Bulldog. Adrian got six more runs in the top of the third to take a 12-0 lead. Shawn Mattingly and Trent Dahlstrom were saddled with five earned runs and eight hits in 3.1 innings on the mound. AC added four more runs in the fourth and a single run in the eighth.
Ryan Domschot got the start for Adrian and went six innings picking up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0. Domschot allowed six hits and two earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Adam Stone, Jason Fryman and Matt Tuttle threw three innings of scoreless relief while striking out four and walking just one. The trio also allowed just one hit among the final nine outs.
Adrian will play twice more this weekend with a pair of nine-inning games on Saturday and Sunday against Ohio Northern. The games will take place in Franklin, Indiana and will both begin at 11:00 am.
