The Adrian College baseball team got back to the .500 mark (4-4) on Saturday with their second straight blowout in consecutive days. The Bulldogs disposed of the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University by the final score of 12-1 and got a strong pitching effort from senior Alex Webster.
Webster struggled in his first two starts of the season, but put things together on Saturday going eight innings and allowing one earned run with no walks and no strikeouts (1-1). Dan Welch pitched the final inning and allowed one hit.
The Bulldogs gave Webster a lot of breathing room after scoring six runs in the first three innings. Adrian put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the first and later added two runs in the second and one more in the third. Brian Bilius, Jake Cappelletty and Kyle Strawn each recorded an RBI in the first inning. Todd Meyers had a sacrifice fly in the second inning plating the fourth run of the game. Joe Dubina also had an RBI single in the third.
Adrian added three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Kris Powell drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh and Alex Cowart was hit by a pitch with the bases full to collect an RBI. Bilius also had a fielder's choice RBI in the seventh. Andrew Anderson had an RBI groundout in the eighth after a Cappelletty single and Nate Clark double. Meyers had an RBI single down the left field line to score Clark in the inning.
Adrian collected 12 hits including 11 singles against three Polar Bear hurlers. Justin Miller took the loss for Ohio Northern (4-4) falling to 1-2 on the season. He allowed seven earned runs and walked five in 4.2 innings. Cappelletty went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and upped his average to .407 early in the season. Cowart went 3-for-3 with a walk and also scored a run. Dubina had three hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and two RBI's. Adrian drew 10 walks as a team and fanned just three times.
These teams will play again tomorrow at 11:00 am before AC plays their home opener on Wednesday, March 18 at 5:00 pm against Defiance.
