Baseball Bombs Hornets, 20-2 and 8-2

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College baseball team won their fifth and sixth straight games on Thursday (Apr. 2) at Nicolay Field against the Hornets of Kalamazoo College and are now 12-7 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA. The bats were on display as Adrian scored a season-high 20 runs in a 20-2 romp in game one before pulling out an 8-2 win in game two.

Alex Cowart had a stellar day going 4-for-5 with three doubles and five RBI's. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI's in game one and went 1-for-1 with three RBI's in game two. Cowart also reached base twice in game two being hit by a pitch and also had a pair of steals improving his season total to six thefts. Alex Webster was a key player on the mound in game two as he threw a complete game seven innings and allowed two earned runs and eight hits. He needed just 75 pitches to record his third win of the year with no walks and two punchouts.

The Bulldogs erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the second in game one and cruised from there. Adrian added four more runs in the third, one in the fifth and five in the sixth. They pounded 19 hits including five doubles and two home runs against three Hornet hurlers. Jake Cappelletty hit a solo home run his third of the season over the center field wall in the big second inning and Steve Vanderheyden hit his second home run of the year over the left field wall with one runner on base in the second.

Brian Bilius scored three runs with a hit and walk in game one. Cappelletty went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI's. Joe Dubina went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI's. In all, 10 different players had an RBI in the first game. Mackenzie Matthews and Kyle Strawn each had a double for the Bulldogs.

Ryan Domschot improved to 5-0 in game one and only needed to throw three innings. He allowed two hits and struck out four Hornets. Adam Stone threw two innings and allowed three hits and one earned run. Jason Fryman and Adrian Woods also threw an inning and did not allow a hit.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the first in game two and Webster did the rest for Adrian. Webster improved to 3-1 giving up just two earned runs in a complete game performance. Tommy Carion lasted just one-third of an inning for Kalamazoo and despite allowing just one hit did walk four and surrendered five earned runs. Nick Jones was very respectable in relief finishing the game out and allowing two earned runs and five hits in 5.2 innings.

Kalamazoo outhit Adrian, 8-6, in the nightcap as Ryan Benjamin and Jake Hansen each had a pair of hits for the Hornets. Cowart had a two-run double in the first and collected three RBI's in game two. Todd Meyers scored three times and played great defense in game two. Bilius went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's. Vanderheyden broke out of a slump going 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI's after going 3-for-3 with three RBI's in game one. The teams are scheduled to conclude their series at Kalamazoo on Saturday with the first pitch of a doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m.
