ADRIAN, Mich. -
Marietta College came ready to play on Thursday and got to starter Ryan Domschot early as Adrian dropped a 14-3 decision in their first game of regionals at Nicolay Field. The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Cameron Cimino and Casey Levens each drove in a run in the frame for Marietta.
Adrian came back with two runs in the top of the second as Steve Vanderheyden delivered a two-run double to left which scored Nate Sarkissian and Jake Cappelletty with no outs. Brian Bilius lined out to first on the next at-bat and Vanderheyden was doubled off at second to stop any further damage.
The Pioneers broke the game open with a five-spot in the third inning which chased Domschot out of the game. He gave up a season-high seven earned runs and got the loss for just the second time this season (10-2). Dan Welch came on in relief and tossed three innings allowing five earned runs with two strikeouts. Craig Steadman and Nick Vandike finished the game for Adrian combining for 2.2 innings and just one earned run with four strikeouts.
Adrian scored their other run in the top of the seventh as Vanderheyden singled through the right side scoring Cappelletty after a leadoff double. Cappelletty went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored. The top third of the order struggled going a combined 0-for-12 with three strikeouts.
John Snyder went 3-for-6 with a double and triple for Marietta. He also drove in three runs and scored once. Levens, Matt DeSico and Tim Saunders each collected three hits for the Pioneers. Chris Stewart got the win going six strong innings and improving to 6-2 on the mound. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and four punchouts.
Adrian (31-10) will play Rose-Hulman tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in an elimination game for the Bulldogs. RHIT pulled off an upset of top-seeded Heidelberg, 12-2, in the first game on Thursday.
