The women's basketball team got a big scare at Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening, but escaped with an 80-70 overtime win over the Hornets behind a brilliant performance by senior guard Anita Stamps.
Stamps scored a career-high 26 points off the bench after struggling to find her scoring touch over the last few games. She was 9-of-15 from the floor including a 3-of-6 effort from behind the arc. Stamps also was 5-of-5 at the free throw line. She also had five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals as the team improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Bulldogs and the third straight road win. They also evened their overtime record at 1-1 on the season.
Freshman guard Kayla Galecka scored a career-high 13 points off the bench in 35 minutes. Galecka was 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw stripe. She also had four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Sophomore guard Katie Ross finished with 10 points off the bench as Adrian outscored the Hornets, 49-13, in bench points. Ross connected on three field goals including two triples in five attempts. She also had four steals, three rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes.
Adrian led 33-27 at halftime shooting 54.2 percent in the opening 20 minutes. Kalamazoo (0-11, 0-6 MIAA) made things interesting midway through the second half as the Bulldogs saw their lead shrink from 12 down to two in a three-minute span. Adrian led 47-45 with 10:37 remaining after the Kalamazoo run.
The Hornets took the lead for the first time in the second half, 55-53, with 6:13 remaining after a Courtney Kaplan three-pointer. The lead changed hands five times over the next couple of minutes as the Hornets held a 61-60 lead with 2:26 left after a Jennifer Perrin jumper.
The game came down to the wire as Adrian led 66-64 with 30 seconds to go after Stamps drilled a triple with an assist from Jenn Headley. Kalamazoo called timeout and broke the huddle with Nyemade Cooper missing a pair of shots but getting her own offensive rebounds. Cooper's tip-in with four seconds left on her third effort sent the game into overtime.
Adrian kicked up the defense in the extra session as Kalamazoo shot just 2-of-12 including 0-of-6 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs led throughout the five-minute period as Stamps scored six of her team's 14 points in overtime.
AC shot an even 50 percent (26-of-52) for the game and were 23-of-29 for 79.3 percent at the foul line. Perrin made 5-of-6 at the line and finished with 15 points. Ashley McClarren also chipped in 10 points and six boards before fouling out.
