ADRIAN, Mich. – The women's soccer team dropped a
3-2 matchup against Albion in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon
snapping a 10-game unbeaten and a three-game winning streak by the
Bulldogs (8-2-2, 2-1 MIAA). The Bulldogs had a fight on their hands
against a Briton squad that entered the contest with just one win
this season.
Adrian scored first at 14:28 as
Tessa Kellar took a pass from
Sam Barker and shot from inside the box into the lower right
corner. Rachel Kain tied the game at 1-1 at 30:25 as she used a
back heal to beat keeper
Chayna Wallace inside the box with an
assist from Lauren Eckler.
Albion took a 2-1 lead just 4:16 later as Hannah Mills scored
her first goal of the season off a direct free kick from the left
wing about 26 yards out. Her shot was right along the turf
and a diving Wallace could not get to the left post in time.
In the second half, it was Adrian who came out strong and
forced the tempo. The Bulldogs got a corner kick and
Patti Vaassen
took the kick and lobbed it into the box as Barker headed it home
at 58:42 to knot things up at 2-2.
Barker went out of the game with an apparent injury late in
the second half but not before she set the single-season goals
record (15) off the header. The contest went into overtime and then
double overtime as Albion got a break in Adrian's defensive
end and capitalized. Eckler got free from about 20 yards out
straight on and fired a shot over the head of Wallace at 104:23 to
end the game with an assist from Lauren Beck.
Kellar scored her fifth career goal in the contest and Barker
now has 39 points this season. Wallace made seven saves in net but
it was the first time this season the team had allowed more than
two goals in a game. Adrian had not allowed a goal since September
19 at Elmhurst going three straight games without allowing a goal.
Adrian outshot Albion, 22-16, including a 11-10 edge in shots on
goal. Adrian also outshot Albion, 13-6, in the second half.
