Box Score CEDARBURG, Wis. – It was a rough night for the Adrian College women's hockey team as they found themselves in an unfamiliar situation. The Bulldogs trailed Concordia (Wis.) most of the game as they would fall 5-4 to the Falcons. The Bulldogs suffered their first conference loss of the season as they fell to 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the NCHA.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead scoring right off the bat three minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Not wanting to be down going into the first intermission, junior Brooke Zaleski (Toledo, Ohio) scored with 24 seconds left in the period on an assist from freshman Danielle Smith (Highland, Mich.).
The second period was much the same as Concordia took advantage of an Adrian penalty to score less than two minutes into the period to take the lead. The power play goal by the Falcons was only the second power play goal the Bulldogs have allowed all season. Less than a minute later, the Bulldogs were called for another penalty and Concordia quickly took advantage and scored again. The Falcons went back on the hunt and scored 12 seconds later. Coach Lomanto replaced starter Emily Michelin (Highland, Mich.) with sophomore Ashley Drop (Erie, Pa.). Adrian would net a goal at the 6:36 mark by Nina Laurie (Palatine, Ill.), her sixth of the season on an assist from senior Stacey Kempson (Windsor, Ont.). As they headed to the final period, Concordia led 4-2.
The Bulldogs got on the board early as Kempson scored 1:17 into the third period on an assists from Laurie and fellow freshman Morgan Poole (Palatine, Ill.). Concordia answered back at the 10 minute mark with a goal of their own to push the lead back to 5-3. Lomanto took a gamble and pulled Drop in lieu of an extra attacker when off-setting penalties were called. Kempson scored again, her team-leading eighth goal, midway through the penalties to pull within one. After the ensuing faceoff, Lomanto again pulled Drop to get the extra attacker. The Bulldogs has several chances in the last two minutes to net the game-tying goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
Michelin, who started the night second in the nation in goals against average and save percentage, made seven stops while allowing the four Concordia goals. Drop made 11 saves in her first action of the season while allowing only one goal.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound as they will wrap up their conference series with the Falcons on Saturday, December 11 at 3:00 p.m. est.
