March 13, 2010

Final Stats

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The rain halted game two of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Franklin College but Adrian managed to pull out an 8-7 win on a wet field in game one. The Bulldogs improved to 3-2 overall with one more game at DePauw left on their spring trip scheduled for tomorrow.

Adrian built a 4-0 lead after a four-run top of the third and then saw Franklin come back to take a 7-5 lead after seven innings. Adrian rallied with two runs in the eighth and the winning run in the ninth.

The third inning for Adrian featured an Andrew Anderson sacrifice fly and then back-to-back homers by Alex Cowart and Jake Cappelletty. Cowart's two-run shot to left was his second of the year and scored Nate Sarkissian from first base. Cappelletty's solo blast to right was his second jack of the year.

Sarkissian had an RBI single in the fourth with two outs which scored Brian Bilius. Bilius led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Franklin scored a pair of runs in the sixth after starter Ryan Domschot was lifted for freshman Josh Burd. Burd allowed three hits including a two-run double and was relieved by Sean Hartman. Hartman retired three straight hitters to close out the sixth.

Franklin took their lead with a three-spot in the seventh. Hartman allowed a two-run homer to left with one out which gave Franklin a 6-5 lead. Craig Steadman replaced Hartman and gave up an RBI single to give Franklin a two-run advantage. Steadman got a strikeout looking and fielder's choice to end any further damage.

The Bulldogs tied things at 7-7 in the eighth on three hits and got help from one Franklin error. Adrian quickly got two outs before Jason Greer singled to start the rally. Bilius followed with a single to left to put runners on first and second. Nate Clark pinch hit for catcher Joe Dubina and struck out swinging but reached first on a passed ball on the third strike to load the bases. In the process of getting the ball, the catcher then threw the ball away trying to get Clark at first which allowed pinch runner Garrett Green to score. Cody Meyer had an infield single for an RBI and scored Bilius with the tying run.

Steadman held Franklin off the board stranding two runners in the eighth to setup the ninth. Sarkissian walked to start off and Anderson followed with a single to center advancing Sarkissian to third. Cowart was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cappelletty walked to earn the game-winning RBI. Adrian left the bases loaded to keep Franklin in the game.

Dan Welch came in to try and save the game and did just that. He got a flyout to center and then struck out the final two hitters for his first save of the year. Steadman got the win in relief improving to 1-0. Adrian had 13 hits for the game as Bilius led Adrian with three hits in five at-bats. Cowart and Cappelletty each had two RBI's while Meyer had two hits and one RBI.
