Bulldogs Start Conference with Sweep at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Adrian College baseball team got off to a great start in the MIAA with a sweep at Calvin College on Saturday by the scores of 9-3 and 7-2.

Adrian (7-5, 2-0 MIAA) scored nine runs on seven hits in game one and got things started in the top of the first with two runs off Calvin starter Ben Sietsema. Nate Sarkissian had a two-run single through the left side which plated Garrett Green and Alex Cowart with one out.

The Bulldogs got two more runs in the third as Cowart hit a two-run home run to left center scoring Andrew Anderson who had a one-out double. Calvin got a run in the bottom of the third on a Kyle Gurzynski RBI double with two outs. Adrian opened up a 6-1 lead with a two-run sixth as Joe Dubina had a RBI sacrifice bunt and Chad Williams had a sacrifice fly to center with one out.

Adrian advanced their lead to 9-1 with three runs in the seventh. Brian Bilius had a two-run single up the middle and Dubina had an RBI single. Calvin scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Ben Cok had a two-run home run to left off Ryan Domschot. Domschot held his own in game one going six-plus innings and allowing four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts improving to 2-1. Dan Welch threw in the seventh and alllowed one hit with two flyouts and one groundout.

The Bulldogs screamed out of the box in game two as they scored six runs and then got a solid pitching performance from Josh Lancaster. Adrian had just three hits in the first and were aided by a Calvin error. The final two runs for the Bulldogs were unearned. Jake Cappelletty had a two-RBI single to left in the inning and Green also had an RBI infield single.

Lancaster allowed just one hit in the first two innings and Calvin had a chance to get back in the game in the third but left the bases loaded as Scott Tipton struck out swinging. The Knights got two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2. Gurzynski had an RBI single and Jake Van Alten also had a RBI sacrifice bunt.

Dubina had an RBI single in the fifth to get one of those runs back and make it 7-2. Calvin had just three hits in the final three innings as Lancaster was relieved by Sean Hartman in the sixth. Hartman gave up just one hit and struck out two. Lancaster improved to 2-1 going five innings and allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts.
