Give round one to the Bulldogs in the marquee series of the MIAA season thus far as Adrian (22-8, 16-2) went into Boeve Stadium and came away with two big wins (6-1, 14-6) against the Flying Dutchmen. Adrian now has a four-game lead in the conference standings and will look to increase their lead as they host Hope tomorrow at Nicolay Field in a twinbill starting at 1 PM.
Hope took a 1-0 lead in game one and then Adrian scored six unanswered runs as starter Ryan Domschot (5-1) got into a groove in the middle innings. He finished with a complete game, four-hitter with one earned run, two walks and five strikeouts. Derek Fairchild (3-2) took the loss for Hope as he lasted five innings and allowed seven hits and six earned runs. He walked four and struck out just one batter.
Jon Ponte had an RBI single in the first to give Hope a brief 1-0 lead. Adrian responded with two runs in the top of the second. Nate Sarkissian walked to lead off and stole second with one out. Jake Cappelletty drove home Sarkissian with a RBI single to tie the game. Cody Meyer came up with two runners on base and had an RBI single to shallow left which scored Cappelletty just under the tag at the plate.
The Bulldogs had a big three-run fourth inning as Andrew DeLuca singled to lead off and was sacrificed over to second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on ball four to Meyer which was a passed ball back to the screen. Brian Bilius had a two-out double to left and Andrew Anderson advanced to third after reaching on a fielder's choice for the second out. Alex Cowart delivered a two-run single to center and Adrian was up 5-1.
Adrian manufactured a run in the fifth as Cappelletty was hit with a pitch with one out. Deluca bounced into a fielder's choice for the second out and then stole second. Joe Dubina singled home Deluca for the game's final run. Domschot only gave up one hit in the final four innings of work to put to rest all comeback thoughts by Hope. Cowart was 2-for-4 in game one and six other players had a hit for the Bulldogs.
The bats warmed up in game two for 16 hits against four Flying Dutchmen hurlers. Danny Detmar (3-2) lasted just 1.1 innings and gave up six earned runs. Adrian scored five times in the top of the first. Sarkissian had a two-RBI double with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Cappelletty had a one-out RBI single to score Sarkissian to put AC up 3-0. Dubina later in the inning had a two-out, two-RBI double to make it 5-0.
Hope came back with three runs in the bottom of the first against Josh Lancaster. Lancaster (6-1) gave up four hits as Colton Bodrie had a RBI single and Pete Zessin had a two-out, two-run double to deep center to cut the lead to 5-3. Lancaster shut down Hope for the next four innings as his teammates kept putting runs on the board. AC scored once in the second, five in the third and three more in the fourth to lead 14-3. Hope scored two runs off Lancaster in the sixth as he finished with six innings under his belt and eight hits. He allowed five earned runs and walked one with three punchouts. Craig Steadman threw in the seventh and gave up a run on two hits.
Cowart had two doubles in four at-bats with two runs scored. Bilius went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Dubina was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. Meyer finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Cappelletty had three RBI's and three hits in the nightcap.
