Bulldogs Rally Late to Take Down Alma

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team rallied from down five with less than four minutes to go in the game to beat Alma College 51-48. With the victory the Bulldogs improved their record to 5-8 on the year and 2-4 in the MIAA.

The Bulldogs trailed 21-19 at half time after both teams struggled to score in the first half. Neither team was able to score until Alma found the basket at the 16:03 mark. Alma led by as many at seven in the first half before Adrian was able to pull within two at the half. Both teams shot 25 percent from the floor during the half.

Adrian started the second half on an 8-3 run to take the lead for the first time since midway through the first half. The Scots would rally going on an 8-2 run of their own to take the lead back. Both teams exchanged leads several times in the second half until Alma pulled away taking a five point lead with 4:45 left in the game. The Bulldogs finished the game on an 8-0 run, including the game winning basket by junior Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) as put-back a rebound. Freshman LaQwana Dockery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) stole an Alma pass and drove the floor to seal the Adrian victory with a layup. The Scots had a chance for a game-tying three pointer at the buzzer but the Adrian defense did not allow Alma to get the shot off in time.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Rachael Walker (Warrensville Hts., Ohio/John F. Kennedy) scoring nine points, grabbing seven rebounds and two steals. Fellow sophomore Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie) added in seven points while pulling down a team-high eight boards and three steals. Junior Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson) also scored seven points while making six rebounds. The freshman duo of Dockery and Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) contributed six points each, while pulling down four and five rebounds respectively. Dockery also led the team with three assists. Sophomore Jasmine Byers (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) contributed five points and four boards.

The Adrian defense held Alma to the second lowest points scored and opponent field goal percentage (33.9) for the season.

Adrian will look to improve their conference record as they host St. Mary's College on Saturday, January 15 at 3:00 p.m.
