Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – It was a tough loss for the Adrian College women's basketball team after falling behind early to MIAA opponent St. Mary's College as they fell 75-56. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 5-9 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.
Adrian fell behind quickly as St. Mary's started the game on a 12-0 run before the Bulldogs finally scored at the 16:33 mark. The Belles pushed their lead to 16 at 20-4 before the Bulldogs started to mount a comeback. Adrian pulled within six after going on a 20-10 with just over seven minutes to go in the half. St. Mary's finished out the half on a 19-9 to lead 47-30 at the half. The 47 points by St. Mary's was the most given up by the Adrian defense in a half this season.
The second half was evenly scored with the Belles taking the edge 28-26 but the first half damage was done. St. Mary's led by as many as 22 during the half. The Belles outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 38-20, while leading 23-4 in second chance points. The 21 turnovers the Bulldogs caused were the most this season. This was the first time all season that Adrian did not at least have a share of the lead throughout the game.
Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson), a junior, led all scorers with 22 points on the night, 16 of them coming in the first half alone. The 22 poured in by Ross was also a team season-high. Sophomore Nicole Boggs (Gibraltar, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) added in 10 points while junior Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./Hudson) added in nine points and grabbed six boards. Sophomore Rachael Walker (Warrensville Hts., Ohio/John F. Kennedy) tallied five rebounds, four points and three assists. Junior Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) had a game-high five assists.
Ross' 22 points is the most by an Adrian player since Anita Stamps scored 26 on January 13 of last season against Kalamazoo.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound as they travel to Kalamazoo on Tuesday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m.
