Box Score RIVER FALLS, Wis. – It was a back-and-forth game on Saturday between the Adrian College women's hockey team and the second ranked Wisconsin-River Falls (15-0-2, 11-0-2) as they skated to a 2-2 tie. The Bulldogs gained a point in the NCHA standings to maintain sole possession of the fourth spot in the conference with an 8-2-3 record.
The Falcons got on the board first as Breanne Hrabe scored a power play goal with just under 12 minutes left of the first period. The Bulldog answered back in the second with their own power play goal six minutes into the period, as junior Kelly Salis (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) netted her fourth goal of the season on an assist from senior Danielle Maludy (Maumee, Ohio). With the goal, Salis' consecutive goal streak now stands at three games.
Tied 1-1 in the third, senior Stacey Kempson (Windsor, Ont.) stepped up for the Bulldogs and scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season and her first since the Bulldogs faced #1 RIT. The lead was short lived as the Bulldogs were called for consecutive tripping penalties less than a minute apart giving the Falcons a 5-on-3 advantage and River Falls used it to their advantage. Kait Mason scored the second Falcons power play goal of the night to knot the game a two goals apiece. Mason's goal came only seconds before senior Nicky Futers (Sarnia, Ont.) was to return from the penalty box.
Neither team could find the net in the five-minute overtime period. The Falcons held a 5-2 shot advantage in the extra period.
In goal, freshman Emily Michelin (Highland, Mich.) made her first start after sitting out the previous three games, stopped a season-high 42 shots. For the game, the Bulldogs were out-shot 44-24, including 18-8 in the third period.
Adrian is the only team in Division III to play both the #1 and 2 ranked teams in the same month. Neumann University is the only other school in the nation to face teams that were ranked first and second at the time they played them (RIT was first and Plattsburgh second at the time).
The Bulldogs were called for 10 penalties on the night, the second time in three games that they have reached double-digit penalties, three of which came in the OT period. On the night, Adrian was 1-3 on the power play while the Falcons were 2-9. For the season, Adrian is now 0-1-2 when tied after the second period and 0-4-2 when the other team scores first.
Adrian will look to hand Wis.-River Falls their first loss of the season as the two teams will faceoff at 1:00 p.m. est. on January, 30.
