Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Adrian College's women's basketball team scored the first two points in their game against Calvin College, but managed just eight more the rest of the first half in their 57-32 loss. The Bulldogs fall to 7-12 on the year and 3-8 in the MIAA.
Adrian struggled early on as they managed only 10 points in the first half, the lowest for any half this season. The Bulldogs shot 14.3 (4-28) from the field in the opening half compared to Calvin's 41.7 (10-24). Fouls also hurt Adrian in the first half as the Knights went a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. The Knights closed out the first 20 minutes on an 8-0 run to lead 31-10 at the half.
The run by Calvin continued in the second half as they started 8-0 before Adrian could get on the board at the 14:49 mark. Adrian would counter with a run of their own as the defense held the second highest scoring offense in the conference without a basket for just over four minutes as the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run. Calvin countered with another 8-0 stretch to push their lead to a game-high 32 with 9:31 left in the game at 50-18. Adrian bounced back to finished off the game with a 14-7 advantage.
Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./Hudson), a junior, led the Bulldogs with seven points and nine rebounds. Freshman Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) added in six points while pulling down four rebounds and grabbed three steals. Sophomore Rachael Walker (Warrensville Hts., Ohio/John F. Kennedy) scored six points while fellow sophomore Jasmine Byers (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) added in four.
The Bulldogs defense held Calvin to their third fewest points of the season, 18 points fewer than in their game earlier this season and 14 points under the Knights season average. Adrian out-rebounded Calvin 41-33 for the game.
The 32 points scored by Adrian is the lowest ever against an MIAA opponent and the second lowest in school history since women's basketball became an NCAA sport. The lowest point total by an Adrian team came in the 1997-98 season in a 62-26 loss to St. John Fisher College. The last time Adrian scored fewer than 40 points was on January 6, 2005 in a home loss to Hope 71-37.
