Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's soccer team (4-9, 2-6) blanked Albion College (1-11, 0-7), 1-0, on the backs of two team captains and a standout freshman goalkeeper to keep their playoff hopes alive in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest on a windy, rainy Saturday night.
Senior captain Travis Smith delivered a perfectly targeted pass toward the Albion net. Junior captain Ryan McCarthy caught the pass in stride deep in the Britons' penalty area and knocked it past their goalkeeper. The play happened so quickly that McCarthy, an Adrian defender and goalkeeper almost reached the ball simultaneously; with McCarthy ultimately winning the ball, the battle and the game. McCarthy also had a goal in the team's last home game-also a win. The goal moved McCarthy into a tie for second on the team with three goals on the season. For Smith, it was his first point of the season and it couldn't have come at a better time.
"The team deserved this win based on preparation, focus and confidence. Their work ethic really paid off," said head men's coach Chris LeFevre.
Tremaine Grant played extremely strong anchoring the back line, from winning tackles to winning aerial battles. His most important play came late in the second half, where he cleared the ball off the line and saved a potential tying goal.
The team hopes to extend its home winning streak to three when they host Hope College on Wednesday, October 10th, at 7:00 p.m.
