Men's ACHA Division 1 Ice Hockey

ACHA D1 Wins Huge Matchup over Oakland

If playing Davenport the night before wasn't tough enough, the Bulldogs had to step up once again has they faced off with another conference rival in Oakland University on Sunday, Feb. 12. To make matters worse, the Bulldogs hadn't beaten the Grizzlies this season. Was this the weekend that the Bulldogs put all the pieces together and started making waves in the national rankings? Each time the Bulldogs faced off against the Grizzlies it came down to a one-goal game, both home and away. The Bulldogs would rewrite the story with a much different ending than before.

Early in the first period the Bulldogs found themselves on the penalty kill and refused to let the Grizzlies set up any form of offense, killing off an early penalty. With both teams jostling for control and position, neither one was willing to give an inch. At one point it seemed like the Bulldogs would take the early lead, but Grizzly goalie Corey Hrischuk shut the door on the Bulldogs. It wasn't until 11 seconds left in the first period that the first goal of the game was tallied on the scoreboard. It came on the power play for the Grizzlies from Billy Balent. The Bulldogs walked into the locker room after the first period down 1-0 much like the previous night against the Panthers.
In the second period the Bulldogs came out and turned up the intensity. They earned a power play and had the opportunities, but were unable to get on the board. The Grizzlies started to counter the Bulldogs intensity with higher pressure and more physical play. Finally at the 14:38 mark in the second period, the Bulldogs bust through the wall that is Hrischuk on the power play. Bulldog goalie Matt Anderson, out of his net, wrapped the puck around the boards and up to Ryan Bachman. Bachman sent the puck up to Logan Blackwell, who skated into the zone and weaved in and out of defense to get his shot off. Blackwell put enough on the shot to beat the Hrischuk glove side who was sliding from left to right already. With Blackwell's goal it tied the game at 1-1, but the Bulldogs were hungry for more and kept fighting for the puck and control. With just under a minute left the Bulldogs replayed the late goal they gave up in the first period and it came shorthanded. With the newest addition to the team freshman Mike Wiest in the box for cross checking Bachman did it again getting a goal. Bachman picked off a pass and was off to the races with a one on one with Hrischuk. Bachman made his move and beat him five-hole for the shorthanded goal and the 2-1 lead after two periods.
The third period started with both teams digging deep because sitting in the stands you could tell the winning team would come down to who wants it more and who has more heart at the end of the day. The physical play started to turn up, but all the play was legal and legit. There were no penalties the entire period meaning both teams knew mistakes could cost you the game. Just 8:08 into the period the Bulldogs put another goal on the board from Marc Madarasz off a rebound. Original shot came from Wiest who had it blocked in front. Spencer Jordan picked it up and fired it, but again it was blocked leaving a rebound and Hrischuk on his back leaving an empty net for Madarasz to tally the third goal.

Just a minute and a half later another rebound goal coming from Blackwell gave him his second goal of the game. Wiest played another role in the goal taking the original shot, but Hrischuk left a rebound for Blackwell to put away and with that goal the Bulldogs put away the Grizzlies. The Bulldogs had kept digging and fighting while it seemed Oakland's will to play was gone.

The Bulldogs refused to quit the entire game. When you refuse to quit you refuse to lose and that is what the Bulldogs had. They had a fire about them that night and their conditioning started to show as tired legs for the Grizzlies took their toll.
Sophomore starting goalie Matt Anderson had yet another solid night between the pipes making 22 saves on 23 shots and allowing just one goal. Just like the night before he was asked to make saves when they needed them and he stepped up to the plate once again. He closed the door on the Panthers and Grizzlies in back-to-back nights allowing just two goals in two nights to the top teams in the conference. In previous games against the Panthers the Bulldogs gave up a total of 16 goals and only scored eight, but when the chips are down Anderson stepped it up. In the previous two games against the Grizzlies, the Bulldogs gave up 10 goals and scored eight each being one-goal games.
The Bulldogs are starting to catch on fire and when the playoffs role around the hottest team at the end of the season is the most dangerous. But before the playoffs, the Bulldogs need to grapple with the Grizzlies one more time.
