Crosstown Clash Goes to the Saints 10-4

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – It was six years to the day the last time Siena Heights defeated Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been fairly dominant winning six games in a row and outscoring the Saints, 36-18, in the process. That all changed on Wednesday afternoon as the host Saints dedicated their new baseball field and delivered to the home crowd with a resounding 10-4 win.

Adrian jumped out early with a pair of runs in the top of the first and it looked like a ton of runs were on the way. Sam Fischer opened the game with a triple (fifth season) and Andrew DeLuca followed with one of his own (first season) to make it 1-0. Mitch Stefanski then reached on an error but was credited an RBI as DeLuca would have scored regardless of the miscue.

Craig Steadman looked good through the first three innings but then ran into troubles in the bottom of the fourth when Siena Heights scored twice to tie the game at 2-2. Steadman went four innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs with no walks or strikeouts.

The Saints widened the gap with a three–run sixth inning. Eric Sims (1-1) pitched a clean fifth but yielded five runs total as SHU scored two more times in the seventh. However, errors were costly as Sims gave up just two earned runs in his three innings of work. Sims allowed four hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Adrian trailed 5-2 heading into the top of the seventh and cut the lead to 5-4 against Travis Mielcarek. Fischer drove in both runs during the inning and finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored. The Saints scored the next five runs of the game to claim the six-run edge. Josh Burd gave up three runs (two earned) in the eighth allowing four hits with a strikeout.

Jake Sperry got the win for Siena Heights pitching the fifth and sixth innings. He allowed one hit and walked one. Kyle Benschoter went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the leadoff spot for the Saints. Cory Lehman went 3-for-3 with three runs and a RBI. Mike Lollo collected three hits in four at-bats with a run and RBI.

The Bulldogs will get back on the diamond tomorrow with an MIAA doubleheader at Nicolay Field against Calvin College. First pitch is set for 2:00 P.M.
