Bulldogs Complete Season Sweep at Calvin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team completed a season sweep of Calvin College for the second straight year taking all four games during the week. On Saturday the Bulldogs traveled to Grand Rapids and won both games by the final scores of 8-2 and 10-3. For the series, Adrian outscored the Knights, 40-9.

Adrian finished the four games against Calvin with a .371 batting average and a 2.57 ERA. Sam Fischer went 6-of-11 at the plate with five runs scored, two triples and two RBI. Dom Pompey and Garrett Green each led the Bulldogs with five RBI.

The Knights carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning of game one before Adrian finally got to Jeffrey Victor and chased him after 5.2 innings. Adrian took advantage of Calvin's bullpen scoring six runs (three earned) in one inning against Cory Laster.

Adrian scored five runs in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to distance themselves from the Knights. The five-run sixth all started with two outs as Calvin allowed the first run to score after an error. Green's two-run single made it 3-1 and pinch hitter Pompey doubled down the left field line allowing two more runs to score for a four-run edge.

In the seventh, Cody Meyer doubled to start the inning and took third on a wild pitch. Meyer scored from third as Andrew DeLuca was hit by a pitch with one out and got picked off but stayed alive long enough for Meyer to cross home plate. Fischer and Mitch Stefanski then executed a double-steal for Adrian's seventh run. Green then collected his third RBI of the game with a single to left field scoring Stefanski.

Eric Schmidt improved to 4-0 on the year with a 2.65 ERA going the distance of seven innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs. Schmidt walked one and struck out five.

The Bulldogs struck much earlier in game two with five runs off Calvin starter Nate Schepers. Schepers entered the game with a sub-1.00 ERA but Adrian got to him for a total of eight runs (six earned) in 5.1 innings. Schepers allowed seven hits and walked two with three strikeouts.

Adrian countered on the mound with Austin Buchmayer. The freshman hurler exited after four innings allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned). Buchmayer struck out three and did not walk a batter. Brent Greenwood went two innings in relief yielding one run with a walk and strikeout. Lucas Willitzer finished the game in the seventh setting down the Knights in order with a strikeout. Willitzer lowered his ERA to 0.90 in 10 innings this season.

Green went 1-for-3 with his sixth double of the season in game two. Fischer went 3-for-4 with two runs, two triples and two RBI. Pompey drove in a pair of runs in game two and Mike Herzog went 1-for-2 with a double, walk, three runs and three RBI.
