Bulldogs Dust Off the Hornets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The train keeps rolling for the Adrian College baseball team as they took care of business on Saturday with a pair of wins at Homer Stryker Field over Kalamazoo College. The Bulldogs (23-6, 16-2) needed to rally down three in game one for an 8-5 win and then cruised to a 9-1 win in game two.

Kalamazoo (13-15, 7-11) jumped ahead 4-1 after three innings and then Adrian went to work. They scored once in the fourth, four times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth to give them a win. Adrian collected 11 hits in game one. Andrew DeLuca went 3-for-4 with a run for the Bulldogs. Kyle Strawn went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Dom Pompey delivered a two-run double in the fifth his sixth two-bagger of the season.

Garrett Green had one hit in game one which left the yard for a two-run shot, his second long ball of the season. Mike Herzog went 1-for-4 with a RBI double. Jamey Sackett scored twice and roped his second double of the season.

Jason Fryman settled in after three innings and allowed just one run in the final four innings to secure the win. He is now 7-1 this season and yielded six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. He fanned six Hornets and walked one. Tommy Carion took the loss for Kalamazoo (3-4) going five innings and giving up six runs (four earned) with a walk and four punchouts.

Rylie Robinson scattered seven hits in seven innings to improve to 5-1 on the mound in game two. He gave up one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts. Jake Holloway took the loss for Kalamazoo (2-3) going six innings and giving up 12 hits and six earned runs.

Sam Fischer launched his second home run of the year and accounted for two RBI in four at-bats. DeLuca finished the doubleheader 6-for-8 going 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI in game two. Strawn smacked his eighth double of the campaign and collected two hits in four at-bats. Cody Meyer hustled out a triple as part of a 3-for-3 game with two runs and an RBI. Sackett also had two more hits in game two including his third double of the season. Adrian scored in its first four innings and then tacked on three more runs in the seventh.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at Nicolay Field in a doubleheader set for 1:00 PM. Adrian is slowly sneaking up on capturing its fourth straight MIAA title. They are six games up in the standings with 10 conference games remaining. The conference automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament this year will be given to the winner of the inaugural MIAA Baseball Tournament.
