Bulldogs and Britons Split Friday Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBION, Mich. – What a difference a game makes. The Adrian College baseball team had little trouble on Friday afternoon's first game with a 10-1 win at Albion College. All of a sudden, the Britons fight back and claim a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs in the second game of a doubleheader at Frank Joranko Field.

Three seniors and a junior had the biggest influence in the game one victory for the Bulldogs. Senior Jason Fryman shook off his worst start of the season against Alma last week with a complete-game, three-hitter allowing just one earned run in the fourth. He fanned seven and did not walk a Briton batter. Fryman upped his record to 5-1 overall and lowered his season ERA to 1.98 in 41 innings.

Senior Kyle Strawn went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Strawn launched his fourth triple of the season, a two-run hit in the five-run sixth inning for Adrian. Senior Mike Herzog batted eighth in the order and collected his fourth double of the season in four at-bats. Herzog's double was a two-run shot in the three-run fourth inning for Adrian. Junior Andrew DeLuca, the reigning MIAA Position Player of the Week, continued his hot bat going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. DeLuca was hit by the pitch in the fourth with the bases loaded for an RBI and also had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Mike Schypinski took the loss in game one for Albion (4-2). He went five innings and gave up 12 hits and seven earned runs. He did strike out eight and walked one. Ross Hall threw two relief innings and allowed three runs (two earned) with two hits and a strikeout. Adrian totaled 14 hits and three stolen bases in game one. Sam Fischer swiped a pair of bags and has 10 on the season.

Albion got the last laugh in game two with a one-run win. Adrian's record in one-run games is now 3-3 this season. Adrian's overall record is now 15-5 overall and 8-2 in the MIAA. Sophomore Rylie Robinson had been on a roll lately but yielded four runs (three earned) in four innings before being replaced by Zach Robbins. Robbins threw one inning giving up an earned run. Brent Greenwood threw one inning in relief and also gave up an earned run.

Kyle Cassidy limited the damage enough to improve to 3-1 this season. He went all seven innings and gave up 10 hits and five runs (four earned) with a walk and eight strikeouts. Chad Gromek had a 3-for-3 game at the plate in his leadoff role with a run and RBI for Albion. Davin Montgomery drove in three runs and Chuck DeClarke went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Strawn launched his third home run of the season for the Bulldogs to leadoff the sixth inning. He went 2-for-4 in game two. Fischer went 2-for-4 at the dish in the nightcap and also hit his fourth triple of the year. Adrian took a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth before Albion scored twice to take the lead for good. The Bulldogs struck out three times in the top of the seventh to end the game. Both teams registered 10 hits in game two while Adrian committed a pair of errors.

The same two teams will meet on Saturday at 1:00 P.M. from Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College to conclude the season series.
