Adrian Claims 8-4 Win over Wooster in Game One of NCAA Regionals

Box Score

MARIETTA, Ohio - The Adrian College baseball team snapped a four-game losing skid in NCAA postseason play and came-from-behind with eight straight runs in an 8-4 win over College of Wooster in game one of the 2012 Mideast Regional at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta, Ohio. The Bulldogs stopped Wooster four runs in the top of the first and then chipped away. Adrian (36-8) scored three runs in the bottom of the first and then added single runs in the second and fifth innings. Adrian put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior Jason Fryman had a rough first inning but then threw six straight scoreless innings allowing just two runners to reach second base. He finished with his 11th win of the season to set the single-season school record.

"Jason competed like a senior should in that situation," said head coach Craig Rainey. "He calmed down and got ahead of hitters and did his job the rest of the way."

Fryman was able to breathe a little easier courtesy of sophomore R.J. Rios. Rios stepped up in the first with the bases loaded and two outs and drilled a ball to left center to clear the bases and make the score 4-3.

Adrian tied the game at 4-4 in the second as junior Cody Meyer bunted for a single to start the inning and scored on an RBI single by Andrew DeLuca. DeLuca finished the game going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI's. Adrian took the lead for good in the fifth inning as Garrett Green walked to leadoff the inning. Green took second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Kyle Strawn. Strawn collected three hits in five at-bats.

"I had been in a slump over the past few games and I just needed to go back to basics and go with the pitch," said Strawn. "I began to see the ball well and just took what they were giving me."

Brent Greenwood threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to secure the victory. Greenwood put runners on first and third in the eighth with Adrian clinging to a one-run lead and got a big groundout by pinch hitter Ryan Miner.

The Bulldogs added three insurance runs in the eighth as two errors by third baseman Cal Thomay fueled things. DeLuca had a RBI single scoring Mike Herzog and Green drove home two runs with a single through the left side. Green finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's.

"We are a good disciplined hitting team and that came into practice in the eighth," said DeLuca. "We played well in the MIAA Tournament and that carried us into this game at the plate."

The Bulldogs will now play on Thursday night at 8:00 PM in the second contest of the regional against the winner of #2 seed Washington and Jefferson and #7 seed Manchester. That game is in progress at press time.
