Men's NCAA Ice Hockey

Ranalli Hat Trick Highlights Home Opener

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. – The men's hockey team improved to 5-0 overall and in the NCHA with a 7-0 win over Concordia (Wis.) (2-1-2, 2-1-2 NCHA) on Friday night in the home opener at Arrington Ice Arena. Junior Josh Ranalli kept a torrid goal scoring pace with a hat trick to increase his season total to eight. He scored Adrian's second, third and seventh goals on the night with his last two goals coming on the power play.

His first tally was a one-timer to the left post on a great effort by junior Justin Basso at 5:32 of the second period. Basso was on his stomach and got a pass from behind the net to Ranalli. His second goal at 8:15 of the second period came on the power play. He re-directed a shot from the top of the blue line by junior Shelby Gray. His final goal at 15:44 of the third period came from between the circles on another one-timer to the lower left of the net from a Josh Cousineau pass on the power play. Ranalli has 33 career goals now and 12 of those coming on the power play.

Junior Kevin Balas got Adrian on the board at 5:11 of the first period on a rocket just under the crossbar just above the circles straight on net for his second goal of the season. Gray scored Adrian's fourth goal at 16:28 on a stunning one-timer from Cousineau and sophomore Chris Leone. Freshman Michael Hoy scored Adrian's fifth goal at 8:01 of the third period for his third goal of the season. He took a shot from the far left wing and slid the puck along the ice to the lower left of the net through a screen. Junior Duston Hebebrand had the pass behind the net which led to the goal. Hebebrand also scored Adrian's sixth goal at 14:50 of the third on a re-direct between the circles with assists from Hoy and junior Ryan Gieseler.

"I have been really lucky to be with line-mates who are playing well and getting me the puck," said Ranalli when asked about his eight goals in five games to start the season. "I think this team could see anyone score in bunches and right now I am that guy."

Junior James Hamby pitched his second shutout of the season and lowered his season goals-against average to 0.53 by making 24 saves. Adrian went 2-for-9 on the power play and killed all six chances by the Falcons in a chippy game that featured 94 penalty minutes. The same two teams faceoff at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
