Bulldogs Stung in Game 1, Wins Squeaker in Game 2 at Kalamazoo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bulldog baseball team traveled to Kalamazoo on Sunday afternoon playing at Western Michigan University's Hyames Field against Kalamazoo College. The doubleheader was much more than expected for the Bulldogs as they struggled against a Hornet squad that entered the game winless in the MIAA. Kalamazoo played a very tight series against Adrian with the Bulldogs winning three of four, but two of those came by one run.

Adrian really hurt themselves in the 5-4 game 1 loss with five errors. Kalamazoo scored three unearned runs in the contest. The Bulldogs scored one run in each of the first three innings and led 3-2 after three complete. The Hornets took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a RBI single by Anthony Shaheen and a fielder's choice RBI for Scott Devine. Dan Heatherly went 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI's while collecting his seventh double of the season. Heatherly drove home Adrian's first run in the first. Cody Meyer went 2-for-2 and had a RBI single in the second. Heatherly walked in the third and came around to score on a RBI groundout by Jamey Sackett.

Adrian was down to their last out in the seventh after a pair of strikeouts, but Andrew DeLuca drew a walk and Heatherly produced again with a double down the right field line to score DeLuca with the tying run. Holden Branch threw the first six innings for the Bulldogs and allowed four hits and one earned run. Branch was lifted in the seventh for freshman Tommy Eng. Eng gave up a single and walk to start the bottom of the seventh and made an error allowing the bases to be loaded with no outs. Lucas Willitzer relieved Eng but the first batter he faced was Devine who hit a sacrifice fly to right to score K.J. Schultz with the winning run and snap a nine-game losing streak against the Bulldogs.

Adrian had one big inning in game 2 and it held up in a 3-2 win. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third inning after falling behind 2-0 after two innings. Mickey Amboyan had a two-RBI single in the second but Adrian answered in the third. With two outs and the bases full, sophomore Zach Kolvey  had a three-run double which cleared the bases and gave Kolvey his second double of the season and also a new career-high for RBI's in a game.

Eric Schmidt settled in over the final five innings to earn the win and improve to 3-3 this season and 12-3 in his career. The Hornets left just three men on base after the second inning. Schmidt went the distance and allowed seven hits and two earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Jake Holloway took the loss for Kalamazoo going the first 3.2 innings and allowing three earned runs with five walks and a strikeout.

Heatherly had another double in game 2 in four at-bats. Sam Fischer, Ben Yax and Corleone Desimone also had a base hit for Adrian. Heatherly raised his road average to .323 this season with a team-high eight RBI's. Schmidt is 3-1 on the road this season with a 1.33 ERA. Adrian managed to hit just .234 in the Kalamazoo series but drew 25 walks and had a .402 on-base percentage. Adrian is now 6-5 this season in one-run games and will need to have strong series against Olivet and Trine in order to repeat as conference regular season champs.

Adrian will travel to Ohio Northern tomorrow for a non-conference, single nine-inning affair at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will also play at home against Siena Heights on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m.
