Baseball Claims Weekend Series with Sunday Sweep over Albion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldog baseball team moved into a second place tie in the MIAA standings with Calvin College and is one game out of first place behind Hope after a doubleheader sweep over Albion on Sunday at Nicolay Field.

Adrian (14-8, 8-4 MIAA) and Albion (9-12, 7-5 MIAA) played two very different games with the Bulldogs claiming a 2-0 win in game one before exploding for a 17-2 win in game two. Craig Conway for Albion and Holden Branch for Adrian were locked in a pitcher's duel throughout as the Bulldogs were able to scratch across a run in the third and sixth innings.

Sam Fischer drew a one-out walk in the third and then Adrian had three straight singles by Andrew DeLuca, Mitch Stefanski and Jamey Sackett. Stefanski's RBI base hit scored Fischer from second but the Bulldogs could have done more damage leaving the bases loaded. In the sixth, Sackett led off with a single and was bunted over by Dan Heatherly. Jeff Gertley had a groundout to move Sackett to third and Anthony Sergi delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to right field.

Branch went six innings and gave way to Rylie Robinson who earned his first save of the season in the seventh. Robinson fanned the leadoff man and ended the game on a double play ball with runners on first and second. Branch allowed five hits with two walks and five strikeouts to improve to 3-1. Conway evened his record at 2-2 going six innings with six hits and two earned runs.

Albion actually took a 2-0 lead in game two before Adrian scored 17 consecutive runs. The Bulldogs scored four in the first, six in the second, six in the third and one in the fourth. Albion starter Ross Hall did not record an out and walked two batters. Four other Briton hurlers combined to allow 12 more earned runs and walk eight Bulldogs.

Cory Fox improved to 3-1 going four innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Austin Abbott, Tommy Eng and Lucas Willitzer each threw an inning of scoreless ball in relief. Heatherly hit his first home run of the season in the second inning, a two-run blast to right field. He scored three runs and went 2-for-2 at the plate. Stefanski drove in three runs and was hit by a pitch twice. Sergi and Cody Meyer each had two RBI's for the Bulldogs.
