Bulldogs Rally For 7-6 Win at Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Adrian College baseball team has dropped a few games this season after holding a late lead and on Wednesday they got a chance to comeback themselves with a 7-6 win at Earlham College. Adrian (9-5) trailed 6-2 after seven innings but scored twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth to pull out a victory.

Adrian trailed 1-0 going into the third but tied the game with a run as with two outs, Mitch Stefanski singled and then stole second. Dan Heatherly doubled to left to score Stefanski with Adrian's first run. Earlham scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Shane Healy threw 2.2 innings and was pulled in favor of Jordan Frayer. Frayer threw 1.1 innings and walked in a run in the third. Healy gave up five hits and four earned runs with a walk and strikeout.

Adrian scored their second run in the fourth as Corleone Desimone and Hayden Craig had back-to-back singles with one out. John Joseph had a sacrifice fly to center to score Desimone. Earlham added two runs in the fifth as Greg Sombati gave up a home run and a sacrifice fly in the inning.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 6-4 in the eighth as Ryan Dorow led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Stefanski walked and then Heatherly had a RBI groundout as Dorow scored and Stefanski moved to second. R.J. Rios and Desimone walked to load the bases with two outs before Tommy Eng drew a pinch-hit walk to score the fourth run.

Cody Hamilton pitched a scoreless eighth allowing a lead-off walk before shutting down the Quakers. Hamilton would get the win (1-0) after his teammates scored three times in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. Dorow singled with one out and was pinch ran for by Ian Mikowski. Stefanski doubled to center as Mikowski moved to third. Heatherly had a RBI single to left to put runners on the corners. Drew Shutes had gone hitless in four at-bats but delivered in the clutch with a two-run, go-ahead double to left.

Eng took the mound in the ninth for Adrian and would pick up his second save of the season. The Quakers got a lead-off single and a two-out infield single to put the winning run on base. Eng buckled down and got a swinging strikeout to end the game. Zach Ranney and Gunnar Glodich pitched for Adrian and recorded a hitless, scoreless inning.

Dorow finished 2-for-5 and had two putouts and five assists at shortstop. Stefanski went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Heatherly went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Adrian left 10 runners on base while Earlham stranded 13 runners. Adrian gets back to MIAA play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Olivet College beginning at 1 p.m.
