Baseball Watches Heidelberg Rally in the Ninth for 6-5 Win

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio – The No. 14 Heidelberg Student Princes were facing a 5-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth but found a way to win in a 6-5 decision over Adrian College on Wednesday. The Student Princes scored three runs in two separate innings including a rally in the ninth to improve to 13-1 overall. Adrian falls to 10-5 and simply let one get away in non-conference action.

Adrian scored in the top of the first but it could have been much more than one run. The bases were loaded with no outs when Jeff Gertley lifted a sacrifice fly to left but John Joseph was ruled to have left second base early on a tag which resulted in a double play. Drew Shutes singled on the next at-bat which could have scored another run.

Heidelberg scored three times in the second as Eric Monroe doubled followed by a one-out RBI triple by Christian Verde. Verde scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead. Adam Hershberger walked and took second on another wild pitch. T.J. Harkness then doubled to right center for the 3-1 lead.

Adrian cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third as Knorr singled and stole second. Gertley doubled him home to left center to get within one. The Bulldogs took the 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. Ryan Dorow walked and Gertley doubled to left center to put runners in scoring position. Shutes then delivered a two-run double.

Adrian added another run in the top of the eighth with another two-out RBI. Knorr doubled to left center scoring pinch runner Gunnar Glodich. The Bulldogs squandered a golden opportunity in the top of the ninth to increase their lead as they left the bases loaded after consecutive strikeouts.

Shane Healy entered the game on the mound in the bottom of the sixth and tossed three scoreless innings. However he may have been kept in too long as he struggled to start the bottom of the ninth. Harkness, Joey Rydzewski and Evan Long all reached to load the bases with no outs. Alex Grove had a RBI single to center to cut the lead to 5-4. Derek Hug had an infield RBI single to tie the game. Cody Hamilton inherited a huge jam and looked to possibly keep the team in the game as Monroe grounded to third. The throw home recorded the first out but the throw to first base to complete the double play went down the right field line allowing the winning run to walk home.

Adrian registered 11 hits on the day as Knorr, Gertley and Shutes each had multi-hit games. Knorr went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Gertley went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Shutes went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Collin Korte got the start and went two innings allowing three earned runs. Zach Dunn had a solid outing with three innings, four hits, no runs and four strikeouts.
