Bulldogs Take Over First in MIAA with Sweep of Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College baseball team finished off a sweep of Hope on Saturday and took over first place in the MIAA in the process. The Bulldogs needed their final at-bat to pull out a 3-2 win in game one and then scored early and often in an 8-5 win in game two.

Jordan Frayer tossed four innings of no-hit ball in game one but did not factor in the decision. Frayer ran into a little trouble in the fifth inning allowing the game's tying run. He also gave up the tying run in the top of the seventh before giving way to Cody Hamilon. Hamilton stranded runners on first and third and set up the Bulldogs to win it in the bottom of the seventh.

Matt Andrus played a big role in game one's win yesterday in Holland and once again delivered a big hit with a lead-off double to right center. Ian Mikowski pinch ran at second and Gunnar Glodich came in to pinch hit. Glodich laid down a sacrifice bunt moving Mikowski to third. The game ended in a wild fashion as Collin Parcher came to the plate. Hope was going to intentionally walk him as the first pitch was a ball. The next pitch however found the strike zone at chest level and Parcher launched it to center for a game-winning double. Josh Knorr and Frank Resto each had a RBI in game one for the Bulldogs.

Tommy Eng got the start in game two and lasted three innings. Adrian led 7-3 at that point after two runs in the first, four in the second and one in the third. Hope tacked on two runs in the fourth that were charged to Eng after Collin Korte relieved him. Korte went the final four innings and allowed four hits and no runs to get the win (2-0). Ty Van Wieren lasted just 1.1 innings for Hope and gave up four earned runs, three hits and three walks.

Miccoy Drzewiecki went 3-for-3 in game two with his second home run of the season and totaled two runs scored and two RBI. Drew Shutes also drove in two runs and had his fourth double of the season. Zach Leach was asked to fill in for the ill Jeff Gertley in center field and did a fine job. Leach went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI in game two and also got his first hit of the season in game one. The Bulldogs now have a one-game lead in the conference standings over Kalamazoo who split today against Albion.
