Slow Start Dooms Women's Basketball in 89-67 Loss at Hands of Nationally-Ranked Calvin

ADRIAN, Mich.--Antoinea McElroy scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds in her last home appearance on Senior Day, but it wasn't enough as host Adrian College was dealt an 89-67 setback to nationally-ranked Calvin College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

= Calvin jumped out to a 26-9 lead after the first quarter while never trailing.

= The Knights shot 48.6 percent from the field (35-72), made 13 three-pointers and outrebounded the Bulldogs, 45-31.

= Adrian connected on 40.0 percent (24-60) of its field goal attempts, but made 11 fewer baskets than Calvin.

= The Bulldogs trailed 52-35 at halftime, but could not get closer than 11 points in the fourth quarter.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

= Prior to the game, the Bulldogs honored their senior class of co-captains Brigette Cameron, and Amber McCullough, McElroy and Jorden York.

= Freshman Ashley Morris added 15 points in 16 minutes off the Adrian bench. That signals a career-high at the collegiate level, and she is averaging 12.7 points in her last three outings.

= Junior Marissa Cotton had four of the Bulldogs' seven steals for a season high. Classmate Kennedy Kunce matched McElroy for the team lead with six rebounds.

THE OPPOSITION

= Tiffany Karger came off the Calvin bench to score 17 points in 18 minutes, hitting on 6 of 11 field goals and making 4 of 9 from long distance.

= Also in double digits for the Knights were starters Bre Luurtsema with 16 points and Kally Verkaik and Anna Timmer had 15 apiece. Luurtsema pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds while contributing four assists and four steals.

= Abby Springer dished 11 assists to go along with eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

UP NEXT

= Adrian travels to Albion on Wednesday and then Olivet on Saturday in a pair of critical MIAA contests to close the regular season.

= The Bulldogs trail both Trine (8-6) and Olivet (8-6) by one game for the fourth and final spot in the conference tournament.
