Fast Start, Strong Pitching Leads @AdrianBaseball Past Host Thunder, 7-1

ANGOLA, Ind.--Senior Jordan Frayer tossed a complete-game three-hitter and the Adrian College offense got off to a quick start to cruise to a 7-1 victory Saturday at Trine University in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball game. The second game of this afternoon's doubleheader was postponed until Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) due to weather.

THE BASICS

= Records: Adrian Bulldogs 26-9 overall (20-3 MIAA), Trine Thunder 16-18 overall (12-11 MIAA)

FOR ADRIAN
= Junior Ian Mikowski was the tablesetter in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

= Classmate Ryan Dorow had two runs batted in.

= Senior Jeff Gertley, junior Brian Killinger and sophomore Brian Guck had two hits apiece. Guck also had two RBI.

THE OPPOSITION
= Drew Palmer, Zach Thorn and Travis Bandt each had a single for Trine.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME ONE
= Adrian darted to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Dorow knocked in a run when he reached on an error by the third baseman, and Guck rapped a two-run single to center field.

= Trine scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the second, as Spencer Sutton reached first on an error by the third baseman to bring home Drew Palmer, who had singled.

= The Bulldogs took command with four runs in the fifth to cap the scoring. Dorow reached base on another fielding miscue to bring home a run, and senior Matt Andrus doubled in two runs.

= Frayer (4-2) walked two, struck out three and allowed no earned runs while going the distance on the mound, lowering his earned-run average to 3.49 for fifth in the MIAA.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Dorow tied Dan Slagle's school record for most RBI in a single season. Slagle set the bar in 1999. Dorow's 53 RBI tops the conference and is ranked 20th in the latest NCAA Division III statistics.

= Dorow (.413), Mikowski (.411) and seniors Josh Knorr (.394), Gunnar Glodich (.375) rank 2-3-4-T7 in MIAA batting average as the only school with multiple players among the top-7.

= Mikowski stole two bases today to push his MIAA-leading to 22, tying a school record set by Alex Cowart in 2008.

UP NEXT
= Adrian and Trine will conclude their four-game series at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Angola, Ind. The Bulldogs return home next weekend against Hope College. Friday (2/4:30 p.m.) will be Senior Day against the Flying Dutchmen, and the teams will travel to Holland on Saturday (1/3:30 p.m.) to close the regular season.
