Men's Soccer Finishes Season as MIAA Runner-up After 5-0 Loss to Calvin in Championship Game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Adrian College men's soccer team finished the season with a 5-0 loss to Calvin in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship game. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs finished as the conference runner-up for the first time in program history.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Calvin 5, Adrian 0

Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan (Eagles Stadium)

Records:  Calvin (19-0-1), Adrian 11-6-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs had the first chance of the night when a shot from junior Tad Davis went just wide right. Calvin then was able to get the ball down the field and earn a corner kick that was taken by the Knight's Matt Hinds, but the Adrian defense stood strong and only allowed one shot that was blocked.

Freshman Jordan Miller got the next chance for Adrian as he had his shot saved by Calvin keeper Nate Van Ryn (W, 19-0-1) to keep the game scoreless.

The Knights struck first in the 26th minute when Hunter Olson scored off an Ian Adams low cross into the box for a 1-0 Calvin lead.

Bobby McCaw gave the Knights a 2-0 cushion in the 34th minute, scoring off an assist by Matt Hinds.

McCaw tallied his second goal of the night in the 56th minute to put the Knights up 3-0. McCaw was assisted by Olson on the play. Jacob Lyn scored for Calvin in the 63rd minute to give the Knights a 4-0 lead with just over 27 minutes remaining in regulation. Olson got his second assist of the night when he crossed the ball into the box to Ian Adams on a two-on-one situation. Adams chipped the ball softly over Bulldog keeper Spencer Brown's (L, 8-3-2) head and into the net to give Calvin a 5-0 lead in the 70th minute.

TOP DOGS

Jordan Miller and Garrett Miller each had a shot on goal for Adrian.

Garrett Miller and Zach Combs each had a team-high two shot attempts.

• Brown made seven saves in the losing effort.

THE OPPOSITION

• McCaw (2), Olson (1), and Lyon (1) were the goal scorers for Calvin.

• Olson had a game-high two assists, Hinds and Jacob Witte also tallied an assist.

• Van Ryn saved both shots he faced in the game to complete his 13th shoutout.

SEASON WRAP UP

The Bulldogs finish the year with an over record of 11-6-2 and a conference record of 9-3-2. Adrian finished second in the MIAA standings and was the conference runner-up for the first time in program history. Jordan Miller and Justin Tobin also made history as the only Adrian freshman to ever be named to the All-MIAA first team.
