Freshman Pitcher Pierce Banks Dazzles in Debut Despite Bulldogs Dropping Heartbreaker at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.--Adrian College freshman pitcher Pierce Banks took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his collegiate debut, but Noah Heatherly hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to give host Piedmont College a 4-3 comeback win in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening. 

THE BASICS
= Final Scoreline: Piedmont 4-4-0, Adrian 3-9-1

= Records: Piedmont Lions 9-4 overall ; Adrian Bulldogs 0-2 overall

TOP 'DAWGS
= Junior college transfer Hunter Hayes had his first multi-hit game as a Bulldog.

= Senior Ryan Dorow also had two hits, including a double.

= Banks went 6-1/3 innings while striking out five batters and issuing no walks. He allowed two singles and an earned run.

= Junior Brian Guck was the third Adrian batter to get two hits tonight.

THE OPPOSITION
Heatherly had a single and two runs batted in.

Buddy Green (W, 2-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning, with two strikeouts, to get the win in relief.

= Brady Ballstadt scored two runs, walked and went 1-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Banks retired 18 of the first 19 batters he faced and didn't give up a hit until Ballstadt's leadoff single in the seventh.

= Heatherly's walk-off heroics came with two outs and the bases loaded. Ballstadt led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout to move the runner up 90 feet, Andrew Burden and Zach Langley walked to load the bases to set the stage.

= The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead after 6-1/2 innings. Guck had a RBI-single in the top of the second, senior Miccoy Drzewiecki followed with a RBI-groundout in the next frame, and freshman Gunner Rainey hit a run-scoring single in the seventh.

= The Lions got a run back in their home seventh when Burden lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

= In the eighth inning, Piedmont scored a run on a double-steal attempt to make it 3-2. Caleb Norton crossed home plate before Jabin Smith was caught stealing for the third out to end the frame.

= Adrian outhit Piedmont 9 to 4, but had 11 runners left on base.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Bulldogs are preseason nationally ranked No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and "receiving votes" (48 points for 29th) by D3baseball.com.

= Piedmont competes in the NCAA Division III-affiliated USA South Conference.

= The Lions lead the all-time series 6-3, as the teams first met in 2005.
