Baseball's 11-Game Winning Streak Snapped at La Roche in Nationally-Ranked Battle

PITTSBURGH--Host La Roche College used a fast start to defeat Adrian College, 17-5, in a battle of nationally-ranked non-conference baseball teams on Monday, snapping the Bulldogs' season-long 11-game win streak while extending its own to five-straight.

= Records: La Roche Redhawks, 29-7-1 overall; Adrian Bulldogs, 28-6 overall

= National Rankings: Adrian is 22nd by D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, 98 points, and No. 25 by American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, 65 points; La Roche is No. 17 in ABCA/CBN, 219 points, and No. 18 in D3baseball.com, 176 points, polls.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Hunter Hayes and junior Zack Zschering led Adrian with two hits apiece. Hayes had a double.

= Junior Chad Paddock and sophomore Tristin Richardson both contributed singles.

THE OPPOSITION
= Shane Roebuck went 3-for-5, including two doubles, with three runs scored and three runs batted in.

= Johnathan Melendez was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

= Dylan Urban, Jonathan Spina and Joe Professori also had multiple-hit games.

= Nick Tunstall (W, 6-1) got the win after working five innings in which he allowed four unearned runs, five hits and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= In the bottom of the very first inning, La Roche scored six runs on two hits, three walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and an error. Already up 2-0 with two outs, the Redhawks capitalized on a Bulldog error to score four more runs, all unearned.

= Adrian got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when senior Brian Guck grounded out to second base to plate Hayes--who led off with a walk--from third.

= But the Redhawks blew the game open with four more runs in the bottom half of the frame to go up 10-1.

= La Roche outhit Adrian 17 to six.

= Adrian scored runs in back-to-back innings of the fourth and fifth to close within 10-4. Hayes had a RBI-double, Paddock made a RBI-groundout and sophomore Gunner Rainey lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.

= The Redhawks added to their lead with three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh before the Bulldogs' scratched a final run in the eighth. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The teams' only previous meeting came on May 18 at the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in Marietta, Ohio, where Adrian prevailed 3-2.

= La Roche is the regular season champion (16-2) and No. 1 seed in the upcoming Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament.

= All nine Redhawk starters, plus a pinch-hitter, registered at least one hit in the contest.

= The 17 runs and hits by the Redhawks tie for the most by an opponent versus Adrian this season. Keystone produced 17 hits on March 16 and Alma scored 17 runs on March 25.

= Before today, Adrian's last road defeat came on April 12 in the first game of a doubleheader at Calvin, 4-0. The Bulldogs went on to reel off 11 straight victories.

UP NEXT
= To begin the month of May, Adrian steps back into Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action this weekend as it travels to Holland, Mich., to square off against Hope College on Friday (2 and 4:30 p.m.) and then the Flying Dutchmen come to Adrian's Nicolay Field on Saturday (1 and 3:30 p.m.) to complete the four-game series.
