Fast Start for Women's Basketball Stings Hornets, 75-39

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--Junior Emily Somerville scored 10 of her 19 points in the opening quarter as that helped Adrian set the tone early for a 75-39 victory Saturday over host Kalamazoo in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

Records: Adrian Bulldogs 7-11 overall (3-6 MIAA); Kalamazoo Hornets 0-17 overall (0-9 MIAA)

TOP 'DAWGS
= Somerville shot seven of nine from the field, including 3-for-3 on three-pointers, while reaching a season high in points and grabbed six rebounds.

= Senior Ashley Morris, junior Alivia Kondrath and sophomore Sha'Trice Graves also scored in double figures with 14, 12 and 12 points, respectively.

= Morris pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to round out a double-double performance and made three steals.

= Sophomore Rachel Bucher tied freshman teammate Rylee Campbell with a game-high three assists and had eight rebounds.

= Graves swatted a game-best three blocked shots and produced nine rebounds.

THE OPPOSITION
= Georgie Andrews and Kaytlyn Tidey led the Hornets with 10 points apiece. Andrews completed the double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with three steals.

= Sierra Fraser (7 points) added 11 rebounds and two blocks.

= Lexi Dietz also tied for a game-high three steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= Adrian jumped out to a 25-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Bulldogs closed with a 21-4 run over the last 10 minutes to seal the big win.

= Kalamazoo was held to just 15.2 percent field goal shooting (10-66). Adrian made 29-for-64 for a .453 percentage.

= The Bulldogs also dominated the glass (55-38) and paint (32-10) while outscoring the Hornets bench, 18-2.

= Darby Scott (7 points) did make a jump shot to open the scoring and give Kzoo a 2-0 lead, but Somerville (5) and Morris (7) combined for 12 points over a span of 4 minutes and 10 seconds as Adrian took control. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= Somerville outscored the entire Kzoo team in the first quarter, 10 to seven.

= The Hornets have lost 20 games in a row dating to last season.

= Graves leads NCAA Division III with 56 blocks on the season, which is eight shy of the school record.

= Morris is tied with Brigitte Zavithsanos (2013-17) for 12th place on the Bulldogs all-time assists chart with 173 and needs one rebound to enter the Top-15 in rebounds.

= Adrian leads Kzoo in the all-time series, 68-31, including 33-14 at Kalamazoo.

UP NEXT
= Adrian hosts MIAA foe St. Mary's-Indiana at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
