Heidelberg Comes From Behind to Snap Baseball's Six-Game Winning Streak

TIFFIN, Ohio--Visiting Adrian darted out to a 5-0 lead but Heidelberg got back into the game by taking advantage of several Bulldog errors to come from behind for a 16-5 non-conference baseball win on Wednesday.

= Records: Heidelberg Student Princes, 9-3 overall; Adrian Bulldogs, 7-2 overall

= National Rankings: Adrian is No. 12 by American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (239 points) and No. 18 by the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (165) poll; Marietta is "receiving votes" by ABCA/CBN. Heidelberg "receiving votes" by ABCA/CBN (32 points) and D3baseball/NCBWA (53).

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Dugan Darnell and sophomore Thomas Miller led Adrian with two hits apiece. Miller added a run batted in.

= Senior Chad Paddock, junior Gunner Rainey and sophomore Brandon Cooper each chipped in with a hit.

FOR THE OPPOSITION
= Matt Psychas went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.

= Kyle Jenkins was 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

= Tyler Smith posted 2-for-4, including a double, three RBI and three runs scored.

= Mason Metz (W, 1-0) got the win in relief, allowing just one hit with a strikeout over four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENEND
= In the bottom of the sixth inning, Heidelberg scored three times to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 lead and never trailed after that. Jenkins hit a RBI-groundout to shortstop to knot the score 5-5 and Psychas followed with a similar scoring play to put the 'Berg ahead for the first time, 6-5. Marc Ochoa homered to left field to make it a two-run game.

= The Bulldogs were plagued by a season-high four errors that led to 10 of the 16 Student Princes runs being unearned.

= Things started well enough for Adrian which grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior Brady Wood scored on a passed ball, Paddock had a RBI-single to left field, senior Jordan Torrento hit into a RBI-fielder's choice, Miller had a RBI-single through the left side, and Rainey had a RBI-single to left.

= The Student Princes, however, answered with four runs of their own in the home half to draw within 5-4. They did so by getting only two hits and two walks while taking advantage of two Bulldog errors. Smith had a two-run double to left-center to spark the rally.

= Heidelberg tacked on eight insurance runs in the eighth inning to ice the victory. Psychas capped the rally with a three-run blast over the wall in left field--one of only three hits in the frame. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The Student Princes now lead the all-time series, 21-15, avenging a 15-2 loss in Adrian in 2018.

= Adrian drops to 4-2 on the road this spring.

UP NEXT
= Adrian will begin its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title defense this weekend against the Alma Scots, first playing a doubleheader in Alma on Saturday and then back in Adrian's Nicolay Field for another twinbill on Sunday. Both afternoons start at 1 p.m.
