Visiting Kalamazoo Hornets Blank Bulldogs in MIAA Baseball, 7-0

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich.--In his second career start, freshman pitcher Jack Brockhaus threw a complete-game, one-hitter to keep one of the nation's top offenses in check as visiting Kalamazoo claimed a 7-0 victory over Adrian to open a brief two-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series on Monday.

TOP 'DAWGS
= Senior Korey Mazur had Adrian's lone hit with a triple.

THE OPPOSITION
= Chase Coselman was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

= Jordan Wiley and Alex Fultz also had two hits apiece, with Wiley stealing three bases and Fultz getting two RBI.

= Brockhaus, a 6-foot-6 left-hander, finished with nine strikeouts and worked around five walks to earn the shutout. He threw 74 of 126 for strikes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
= The Hornets outhit the Bulldogs 10-1.

= Kzoo got all the offense it would need in the top of the third inning with four runs across the plate. Coselman, Noah Hecht and Alex Fultz had RBI-singles.

= Adrian had the first scoring threat of the game in the bottom of the first inning when senior Zack Zschering led off with a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a flyout. But Brockhaus induced junior Brady Wood into a groundout to second.

= The Bulldogs had an excellent scoring chance in the next frame, but Brockhaus got out of the jam. Sophomore Brandon Cooper led off with a walk, but was thrown out trying to steal second. After a ground out, Mazur hit a liner that centerfielder Blake Bean misplayed in the lights as the ball rolled to the center field fence for a triple. He was stranded when senior Brandon Baldus flied out to right field.

= The home team threatened again in the fourth when junior Gunner Rainey and Wood had back-to-back walks to begin the inning. After a strikeout, senior Dugan Darnell hit into a fielder's choice for an out at second base putting runners at first and third with two outs. Mazur struck out looking as Brockhaus escaped the jam.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
= The teams were originally supposed to play in Adrian on Saturday, but that date got washed out due to rain.

= Adrian suffered its first shutout loss at home to a MIAA opponent since the 2015 season when Kzoo won a 3-0 decision.

= The Bulldogs still lead the all-time series over the Hornets, 110-66, including 69-38 at home. Adrian saw its five-game winning streak snapped in the series. The seven-run margin of victory was Kzoo's largest against AC since April 28, 2006 (12-3).

= Adrian came into tonight's contest ranked fourth in NCAA Division III scoring offense with 10.57 runs per game.

UP NEXT
= These same two teams will meet again here tomorrow night for a scheduled nine-inning game, starting at 7:30 p.m.
